The first “big event” for the year was the invitation, from the Hong Kong-based ‘World Wing Chun Union’, to attend the ‘2012 “Ip Man Cup” World Invitational Tournament’ and the ‘Opening Ceremony of the “Ip Man Memorial Museum”’ in Foshan City, China. Both Jon Dep and Daryl Yap proudly represented the school (and ‘WSLVT’!) in the full-contact event, competing bravely in a tough competition against seasoned fighters.
Jon also entered in the forms event, succeeding in winning a “Bronze Medal” for his performance of the ‘Siu Nim Tau’ form and both he and Daryl learnt much from taking part.
Whilst in Foshan, our group also participated in a brief parade at the opening ceremony for the combined weekend of events, proudly marching behind a banner for ‘WSL Ving Tsun Combat Science – Malaysia’ as ambassadors for both ‘WSLVT’ and for the people of Malaysia. Over the weekend, old friends were reunited and many new ones made, as well as enabling the group to visit both of the museums dedicated to the late Grandmaster and Ving Tsun patriarch, Ip Man in the town where his martial journey began.
In both locations, it was especially pleasing to see that our own Sigung, the late Sifu Wong Shun Leung, was honoured in the displays and recognised for the great contribution and honour that he brought to Ving Tsun. A very special treat was seeing our very own Sifu David Peterson honoured with his photos also on display in the original ‘Ip Man Tong’ within the grounds of the 300+ year old ‘Zu Miao’ (“Ancestral Temple”) in central Foshan.
